A few months ago, I did something that still feels a little ridiculous: my wife and I spent five nights at the Hammock Cove Resort in Antigua (think private plunge-pool villas, all-inclusive food and drinks, adults-only vibes), and the total out-of-pocket cost for the room was… zero. Actually, less than zero once you count the credits.
Here’s exactly how it happened, step-by-step, so you can copy it if you want.
Step 1: I Grabbed the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card
I’d been eyeing the card forever. Yes, it has a $550 annual fee, but the perks are wild:
- Automatic Diamond status (the top tier) for as long as you hold the card
- Up to $400 in resort credits every year ($200 Jan–Jun, $200 Jul–Dec)
- One Free Night Award every year (good at almost any Hilton)
- Another Free Night if you spend $60k in a year (I didn’t hit that)
- 14x points per $1 spent at Hilton hotels
The current welcome bonus when I signed up was 175,000 points after spending $6,000 in the first 6 months. If you’re interested, here’s the latest offer → Hilton Honors (affiliate link, full disclosure).
I knocked out the spend in two months with normal life + a couple of business expenses, and boom — 175k points landed.
Step 2: I Stacked Points Like Crazy
Between the welcome bonus, a 100% points purchase promo (bought points at 0.5¢ each), and transferring 40k Amex MR points at 1:2, I had over 500,000 Hilton points in about 90 days without staying a single night yet.
Step 3: The Actual Redemption That Blew My Mind
- Hammock Cove (formerly an Elite Island Resort, now a Hilton) is 105,000 points per night.
- Cash price for our dates? $1,300–$1,500 per night.
- I booked 5 nights → 525,000 points total
- Because I had Diamond status → 5th night free
- So it only cost me 420,000 points.
- Cash value of those 5 nights: $6,500+
- Points cost after 5th night free: 420k
- That’s 1.55 cents per point — more than 3× the “average” Hilton point value people quote.
We ate and drank everything in sight (it’s all-inclusive), got suite upgrades because of Diamond, and never paid a resort fee. The $400 resort credit from the Aspire card covered most of our flights on the way back. Real out-of-pocket for the entire trip was under $300 once everything settled.
Other Real Redemptions I’ve Done Lately
- 4 nights at Heritage Le Telfair in Mauritius → 380k points = ~$4,800 cash → 1.27¢ per point
- 5 nights at Tabacon Thermal Resort Costa Rica → 320k points (with 5th night free) → ~$2,700 cash → 0.84¢ per point
The pattern is clear: the longer you stay and the nicer the property, the better the value explodes because of 5th night free + no resort fees on award stays.
My Honest Take After a Year in the Program
I used to be a Marriott guy. Still am for some things. But for pure vacation redemptions, Hilton is quietly crushing it right now — especially if you have Diamond and love beach/resort trips. The footprint is massive (8,000+ properties), and when points sales hit 0.5¢, buying points + 5th night free is basically printable money.
If you travel even a couple times a year and like free breakfast, upgrades, and the occasional “how did we pull this off” trip, the ecosystem is worth it.
