Bollywood has faced ebbs and flows in the first half of 2016. With some tremendously hyped movies disappearing from theaters faster than Tiger Shroff’s moves, while the unconventional budget films doing wonders, the year is yet to see a blockbuster in a true sense.
Let us take a shot at the top hits and misses of Bollywood in each month of 2016.
January
Airlift (Super Hit)
The film based on real life incident of Airlift from Kuwait managed to keep audience glued to it till the end. Unlike most other films in this genre, the film had the right amount of drama to make it a super hit at the box office.
Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 (Flop)
Its strong references to sex didn’t seem to go well with the Indian audience. After going through 200 cuts, the movie seemed to have lost everything that could have possibly engaged people.
February
Neerja (Super Hit)
Critically acclaimed movie that managed to do great business too. Ms. Sonam “Cannes” Kapoor’s portrayal of Neerja Bhanot touched hearts and did not miss the bull’s eye either. The success of the movie could be owed to the flawless portrayal of the actual incident and emotions of everyone involved.
Ghayal Once Again (Flop)
The story of an angry “old” man fails to recreate its magic. Sunny Deol’s dhai-kilo arm could not save Ghayal Once Again from sinking without trace. The movie with the same old villains and predictable plot “Ghayal-ified” the hearts of the ones who went to the theater for it.
March
Kapoor & Sons (Average)
Alia’s cuteness fell flat in front of the inconspicuous acting. With no other interesting releases, the movie was the only option to the audiences, earning it average box-office collections.
Rocky Handsome (Flop)
With no drama in it and a skimpy number of Indian audiences who relish serious action thriller movies, the movie was flop all the way. Did not expect this as the movie had some spine chilling action and mafia-inspired bloodbath.
April
Baaghi (Hit)
With refreshing songs and a cool new couple, Baaghi became one of the highest grosser of the year. Shraddha extends her hit image with some cool action moves and martial arts sequence.
Fan (Flop)
With the image SRK created with Dilwale and HNY, even his Fans couldn’t save his Fan. SRK didn’t seem to expect that KKR would beat Fan. Release alongside IPL and Jungle book was definitely a bad decision.
May
Azhar (Average)
2016 has been the year of real-life stories so far. Azhar, inspite of its flaws did an average business under fame of being inspired by real-life.
One Night Stand (Flop)
A lot of things are still unacceptable to the Indian audience. The makers for the movie still decided to fire the gun having Baby Doll as a shield. But out here, what is unacceptable is just unacceptable.
June
Sultan (Blockbuster)
Salman had a non-Friday release in the form of Sultan on Eid, and still managed to rake in 183 crores in the first week! Bhai ka Dum is still running strong.
Do Lafzon Ki Kahani (Flop)
With too many Korean movies being remade, even Randeep Hooda’s luck that’s on the go failed to show its magic.
Hopefully, the remaining half of the year 2016 will bring some good movies worth reviewing.
