7 Tollywood (Telugu) Movies Remade in Bollywood


The cinema lovers of India are not new to the concept of remakes, neither Bollywood movies remade in other regional languages nor regional language movies remade in Hindi. Here we list 7 movies from Tollywood (Telugu) cinema which have been remade into Bollywood flicks and have been enjoyed by watchers of both sets of movie-goers equally.

Maro Charitra (1978, Telugu) remade into Ek Duje Ke Liye (1981, Hindi)

Maro Charitra is a 1978 Telugu romantic tragedy directed by the famous director, K Balachander. Its Hindi remake titled Ek Duje Ke Liye starred Rati Agnihotri in the lead role while Saritha played Rati’s role in the original version. Kamal Hassan was paired opposite Saritha in Maro Charitra.

The crux of the story of Maro Charitra was cross-cultural love with Kamal Hassan and Saritha playing characters belonging to different castes. The movie was critically acclaimed and even became a blockbuster!

Shubhalagnam (1994) in Telugu became Judaai (1997) in Hindi

A 1994 release, Shubhalagnam was a hit at the box-office! Directed by SV Krishna Reddy, this movie starred Roja, Jagapati Babu, and Aamani in the lead roles. The Hindi remake, Judaai directed by Raj Kanwar had Sridevi, Urmila Matondkar, and Anil Kapoor playing the lead roles. It was released in 1997 and did quite well at the box-office!

Shubhalagnam had such a great response from the audience that it was eventually remade not only in Hindi, but also in Kannada (Ganga Yamuna), Tamil (Irattai Roja), and Malayalam (Sundara Purushan).

Ramudu Bheemudu(1964) of Tollywood (Telugu) became Ram Aur Shyam (1967) of Bollywood

A story of twins who end up in the same hotel not knowing they are biologically related to each other, Ramudu Bheemudu was directorial venture of Tapi Chanakya. This 1964 release had NT Rama Rao playing the characters of Ramudu and Bheemudu. The Hindi remake, Ram Aur Shyam released in 1967 had Dilip Kumar playing the roles of Ram and Shyam.

Apart from a Hindi remake, Ramudu Bheemudu was also remade into Malayalam as Ajayanum Vijayanum (1976) and into Tamil as Enga Veettu Pillai (1964). The Malayalam and Tamil remakes had Prem Nazir and M.G. Ramachandran (M.G.R) playing the title roles.

Athadu (2005, Telugu) remade into Ek: The Power of One (2009, Hindi)

One of the recent Tollywood flicks which have been remade into Hindi, Athadu is a directorial venture of Trivikram Srinivas and falls into the genre of action thriller. Athadu had Prakash Raj, Mahesh Babu, Trisha Krishnan in the lead roles. Considered to be one of the classics of contemporary Telugu cinema, Athadu was remade into Hindi as Ek: The Power of One.

The Hindi remake had Bobby Deol, Shriya Saran, and Nana Patekar playing the lead roles. The Hindi version didn’t quite receive the same kind of response as the original.

Pokiri (2006, Telugu) remade into Wanted (2009, Hindi)

Directed by Puri Jagannath, Pokiri is a gangster-thriller with Prakash Raj, Mahesh Babu, and Ileana D’Cruz playing pivotal roles. The movie which was released in 2006 became a hit and was loved by the audience.

The Hindi remake of this movie, titled Wanted had Prakash Raj, Ayesha Takia, and Salman Khan playing the main roles. Directed by Prabhudeva and released in 2009, this Hindi remake went on to become a box-office hit simultaneously breaking many box-office records.

Vikramarkudu (2006, Telugu) remade into Rowdy Rathore (2012, Hindi)

SS Rajamouli’s directorial venture, Vikramarkudu was released in 2006. Anushka Shetty, Vineet Kumar, and Ravi Teja play the lead roles. This action and drama film was received well by the audience and became a blockbuster.

The Hindi remake of this Telugu movie, Rowdy Rathore was released in 2012. Rowdy Rathore had Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha in the lead roles. This version also did exceptionally well at the box-office and also entered the Rs 100 crore club.

Vikramarkudu was eventually remade in Kannada as Veera Madakari, in Bengali as Birkam Singha, and in Tamil as Siruthai.

Ready (2008, Telugu) remade into Ready (2011, Hindi)

A 2008 Telugu movie, Ready starring Ram and Genelia D’Souza was directed by Srinu Vatla. This action romantic comedy flick received a lot of positive response and became one of the top films at the box-office in the year 2008.

The movie was remade into its Hindi version bearing the same title and was released in the year 2011. The Hindi version Ready was directed by Anees Bazmee with Salman Khan and Asin playing the lead roles.

A Kannada version by the name Raam was there was also a Tamil remake titled Uthama Puthiran.
